A diarist whom I greatly appreciate, has just posted Garrison Keillor’s first response to Trump’s victory.
I like Keillor, and therefore originally recced the diary. But after reading it, I had to de-rec and write this rebuttal.
His article includes almost no mention that non-White people even exist in this country.
Sure, we privileged White liberals can go “grow heirloom tomatoes” for 4 years, as he says, and not too much will befall us on a personal level — but that will mean deserting Latinos to Trump hate, deserting Blacks to Trump disdain, deserting Arabs and Muslims to his anti-Constitutional bigotry, deserting Native Americans to earth-ravaging fossil interests, deserting Asians to his anti-China incitement, deserting LGBT people to his Vice’s cruelty, deserting the disabled to attitudes taken from — I dunno — the 1930s? — and deserting the poor everywhere to Trump/Ryan/McConnell crushing.
Sorry if I forgot anyone. The list is endless.
Not to mention deserting climate action, which cannot wait regardless of what idiot runs the United States Federal Executive.
Not here. Neither me, nor people around me in Seattle — if the first 24 hours post-election are any sign — and hopefully also not this community.
We are, as Hillary says, stronger together. In particular when the group among us with the most means and the most leverage, stands up and fights together with everyone.
