This will be quick and short, and hopefully helpful.
All the uproar and energy isaround whether Democratic Senators will fight. They should damn right fight like Hell. But we are forgetting one other person whom we should pressure.
Neil Gorsuch is not an inanimate object. He is also not a lobbyist or a politician. He is a Federal judge. He should show some minimal integrity.
This seat is dictionary definition of stolen goods, in essence even if not by the letter of the law. Judge Gorsuch knows that, and he should not be accessory and beneficiary of a precedent-setting political crime.
There is also the issue of solidarity collegiality among jurists. If he does not withdraw, he will set a very bad precedent there too, and bad blood in the Court for years, possibly decades to come.
Bottom line: we should pressure Gorsuch to withdraw his candidacy. The resulting embarrassment might force Trump’s hand to renominate Garland.
Judge Gorsuch will have given up on what is any law student’s dream. But first, given what’s ahead in the process, in his case the dream might become a nightmare anyway. And second, as one who is already a high-ranking judge, he should do what’s right and not what’s personally or politically profitable.
And if he won’t listen — well, he happens to live in a town known as “The People’s Republic of Boulder”. I’m sure plenty of neighbors would be more than happy to remind him how a judge should behave.
