#RbPi #10 (11/2018): Channeling Yosef 52 to Get YOU Plugged in!

Already a few weeks ago I was so inspired by the perseverance and impact of Yosef 52’s daily election rally-up-the-troops diaries, that I decided to follow the example with #RbPi. Below the inset there will be a growing list of useful links. Then below that (below the fold?), some relevant EV news/content. Here goes.

#RbPi (#RESIST-by-Plugging-in) diaries expand awareness that:

When the government is run by oil interests and global-warming deniers, switching to a Plug-in vehicle (a.k.a. electric car or EV) becomes a direct, effective act of #Resistance. On the merits, EVs are viable and increasingly attractive in many segments of the US new and used  auto market.

If you are serious about resisting, have a car, and you haven’t plugged in yet, I hope to help you and your community move ahead in the inevitable path to electrification, sooner rather than later. #Resist.

First, note that the term “EV” covers both “pure” battery-electric (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). As long as it can be charged from an outlet, it’s an EV.

(ICE stands for Internal Combustion Engine: the outdated, Oil-Economy-boosting technology still driving >99% of vehicles)

Top Action Table

Maybe EV’s don’t meet your needs. but you surely know someone who’s a good match.

EV know-before-you-buy guide

there are plenty of affordable new EV’s. see current purchase deals here. leasing an ev is a great option. See current lease deals here.used ev’s can be found cheap here!ev’s are super-good against global warming...but we must do something about cobalt in the drc.

There are tens of millions of multi-car, multi-driver households in the US with charging access. At least one vehicle in those households can be easily converted to an affordable/cheap, low-maintenance, moderate-range BEV.

And PHEVs can be all a single-vehicle household will ever need.

Note the potentially bad news under YRWV (tl;dr, in very cold winters range can easily be 30-40% below nameplate), and the good news under Don’t Panic I/II.

List courtesy of ev-vin blog, via electrek. It’s alphabetic so the BMWs will hit your eyes first. Just scroll down.

Right now you can get an amazing 2019 Chevy Bolt BEV in 5 states, for $29-33k BEFORE $7.5k Fed rebate and state rebates. And this is just advertised price; you may be eligible to, or haggle into, more discounts. If there’s no discounting dealer near you, show them these ads.

EV tech is in constant forward flux; It may be better to lease (that’s how we got our Leafs). The lease list is sorted cheapest first (total monthly cost, including the down payment). Right now a wide variety of models leads the table. Like with purchase, take these prices to your dealer and request a match.
This site is peer-to-peer used EV sales, but it only covers a fraction of the used market. See what models/years may be relevant to you, then go to your local Craigslist, etc. Generally you can find simple used BEVs from $5-6k upward.

Don’t believe the Big Oil influenced crap claiming otherwise. And don’t nickel and dime your own personal footprint of buying an EV. Every transition has its costs. We’re playing the long game here; the goal is to force the Oil Economy into massive retreat. The game is long, but urgent: we need YOU to join.

This is not just an EV problem. More cobalt is going into smartphones/devices than EVs. And one-third of EVs have no cobalt at all (e.g., Gen 1 Nissan Leafs, most e-buses). <20% of DRC cobalt is from “artisanal mines” where child labor/slavery is widespread. However. EVs drive cobalt demand growth. DRC’s children deserve better. I don’t have action links here yet, but will continue looking.
Some Leading EV Websites

insideevs.com

electrekgreen car congressfully chargedEv sales blog

My favorite EV site. Used to be independent, now bought by a media company. Still the best. Home of the monthly US plug-in sales scorecard.

I write there occasionally ;)

Newer and somewhat flashier, this site is even more Tesla-dominated than the others.
This site is not just EVs (although EVs dominate). It often takes a deeper dive into technical and academic data sources.
This Youtube channel has been created and hosted since 2010(!) by English actor Robert Llewellyn, arguably EVs’ greatest media advocate (2nd only to Elon Musk).
The best place to get the latest (and historical) numbers out of leading EV markets. The main resource for my annual Top 10 Countries in the EV Revolution series.

Ok, that’ll do for a start. A few news items below the fold.
